Tips for buying a new bathroom suite

What do I need to think about when planning my new bathroom?

Probably the first step when thinking about a new bathroom project is to agree what it needs to achieve. It probably sounds a rather functional question, but the bathroom is often the unforgotten work horse of the house that has to service not only family members but visitors and guests as well.

So, what are the priorities for the bathroom?  Is it a hard-working family bathroom, a sanctuary for an adult only household or a guest en-suite that has infrequent use?

The list of specifications and fittings required will vary greatly depending on the answer to this fundamental question. Just as important is what sort of space you want your bathroom to deliver as this will affect the choice of fixtures and fittings as well as the colour and layout of tiles and flooring.

What should I take with me when visiting bathroom showrooms?

It is always really helpful when buying a bathroom suite to have the measurements of your current bathroom space.  This includes the size of the windows and the height of the room as well as the overall dimensions.  This is not only to help your bathroom designer understand the space available but will also enable them to suggest cleverly thought-out solutions and creative finishes for your bathroom.

The other thing that is often useful for bathroom designers is if you take a photo of what your current bathroom looks like.  This is so they can visualise the space but in addition, they can offer suggestions for the new bathroom based on what they see.

For example, if your current bathroom is struggling to cope with storage, then your bathroom designer will be able to suggest creative ways of including more storage solutions in your new bathroom.

Or, if your current bathroom only has access to a limited amount of natural light from a small window, they will be able to offer imaginative ways of lightening the room through lighting choices or tile colours, sizes or patterns.

What can I do if I have a small bathroom?

If you have a limited space for your bathroom, this doesn’t mean that you have to compromise on style and creativity. In fact, if you do have a small bathroom, you have the advantage of being able to be bolder with your design ideas.

Whether it is colour blocking, open shelving or wall mounted cabinets to free up valuable floor space, your bathroom designer will be able to suggest clever ways of ensuring that your small bathroom will be functional without losing the wow factor.

What do I need to remember when buying a new bathroom?

It is often the more functional elements of a bathroom that people overlook such as the position of the soil stack and the ventilation.

We know it’s not as exciting as what colour tiles or taps to choose, but they are quite important when designing a bathroom and ones that can have financial implications later down the line if not taken into consideration at the start.
